Human Resource Certification Programs

Human resources is a broad discipline that contains several different certifications:

Professional in Human Resources (PHR)
This focuses on the operational and more technical aspects of the human resource practices. It is based in U.S. law and regulations and it is designed for those who:
  • are tactical and logistical thinkers
  • focus on the implementation of programs
  • are held accountable to another HR professional in the organization
  • come in with 2 to 4 years experience in the HR disciplines (this experience isn't as deep as that of a senior practitioner)
  • doesn't have more complicated and progressive work experience
  • focus on the HR department instead of the entire organization
Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR)
While the PHR is focused on the organizational aspects, the SPHR focuses on the bigger picture. An SPHR:
  • plans HR policy that is passed down
  • has the ultimate accountability of the entire HR department
  • has 6 to 8 years of difficult HR experience
  • is knowledgeable about all HR disciplines
  • uses the judgement that is gained with time
Global Professional in Human Resources (GPHR)
This certification is good for companies that hire professionals across the world. The GPHR:
  • has HR responsibilities that aren't confined by national borders
  • understands globalization strategies
  • develops, and evaluates programs, tools, and processes
  • oversees practices that balance employee rights with the needs of the employer
Human Resource Management Professional (HRMP)
This credential is also globally relevant and is designed for those who are management-level in their knowledge and skills. They have mastery of generally accepted principles and strategy. The certification will demonstrate the HR professional's skills in:
  • leadership
  • how to develop people and manage talent
  • how to measure success
Human Resource Business Professional (HRBP)
This validates professional-level core HR skills. The certification focuses on:
  • human resources administration
  • recruitment and selection
  • employee communication and relations
  • training and development
  • health, safety, and security
All of these certificates will show that you are a professional who is dedicated to human resource excellence.
