Human Resource Certification Programs (HR Certification Programs)

Increasing Your Knowledge Means Career Advancement
The human resources (hr) field is become increasingly complicated and requires you to have a superb understanding of federal and state laws. A human resources certification program offers you the opportunity to learn about human resources management often while allowing you to continue working.

How It Started
By the nineteenth century organizations had to deal with a plethora of new federal and state laws as well as handle payroll and personnel paperwork. Owners realized that they needed someone to handle the new responsibilities that came with the new regulations. Eventually this job developed into what we know today as human resources. By 1948, a group of individuals organized the American Society for Personnel Administration (ASPA). In 1975, the ASPA developed a body of knowledge that defined the human resources function, which includes benefits administration, training, risk management, employee relations, and employee development. This idea developed into several classifications of human resources certifications.

  • PHR -Professional in Human Resources, which is for individuals that have two to four years professional level experience in the field and a non-exempt designation
  • SPHR-Sr. Professional in Human Resources, which is for individuals that typically have six to eight years and exempt level designation
  • GPHR-Global Professional in Human Resources
  • HRCI-Allows college student who have graduated within one year to take the PHR exam
What It Means To You
Whether you are new in the field or have many years experience working with organizations specializing in human resources, getting your certificate will provide you with the knowledge necessary to be effective in your position and prove to your peers and management that you are serious about your profession. Keep in mind that many organizations will not employ you in an hr position, if you are not hr certified.
