Training Specialist
A training specialist is a person within a company who is responsible for ensuring that employees acquire and maintain the skills and knowledge to perform their jobs. Most companies recognize the benefits of having and utilizing skilled training personnel. The specialist may develop, arrange, and execute training protocols for both new and seasoned employees, depending on the needs of the company.
New company employees will likely need to complete orientation and skills training in order to understand company policies and procedures, as well as to develop skills specific to their position. A training specialist may be responsible for developing and implementing the training a new employee will need, and may supervise and track the employee's progress as well.
Seasoned employees may require ongoing training, often in relation to certifications or standards that they must meet in order to do their jobs effectively and safely, or in the event that the company upgrades computers or other equipment that will necessitate learning new methods and/or software programs. The training specialist needs to be flexible and amenable to change and to grow as a company develops.
Training specialists need to possess excellent communication skills and be comfortable speaking to groups of people and giving presentations. It is helpful if they can present information in multi-modal formats in order to engage attention and to target a variety of learning styles. They may also need to develop electronic training materials and be able to assist people in completing online trainings.
In order to prepare for a career as a training specialist, an undergraduate degree in human resources is a great way to start. Taking additional courses in psychology, performance management, sociology, and communication will provide other needed skills as well. According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, training specialists are in high demand and jobs in the field are expected to increase by about 15 percent between 2012 and 2022.
Becoming a training specialist can be an emotionally rewarding and a financially satisfying career. Training specialists are there to assist employees in performing at their best and to help make the workplace a great place to be.
