Human Resource Generalist (HR Generalist)

As a human resources generalist, your job duties are diverse, and you play a major role in your human resources department. Human resources generalists help out in all aspects of human resources. If you are a detail-oriented multi-tasker, this career might be for you.

Human Resource Generalists: The Glue of Human Resources

Among all human resource employees, it is perhaps the human resources generalist who acts as the central glue to the whole organization. Human resources generalists take numerous responsibilities, and keep all human resources wheels in motion. As a human resources generalist, your job duties might include:
  • Recruiting and staffing
  • Organizing work space for new employees
  • Updating personnel files and employee status changes
  • Administering leaves of absence
  • Overseeing employee relations counseling and exit interviews
  • Reviewing annual performance reviews
  • Developing and implementing HR policies and procedures
Your actual tasks as a human resources generalist may even be more extensive than this, as human resources generalists help out in virtually every aspect of human resources work.

Becoming a Human Resources Generalist: What Training Do I Need?

Most employers prefer to hire human resources generalists with bachelors' degrees. The following degree programs are common among human resources generalists:
  • Human resources
  • Business administration, especially with a focus on human resources or personnel
  • Management
  • Communications
Other degrees, such as those in the social sciences, can also prepare you for this career, especially if you have previous experience working in a human resources department.

Some employers list previous human resources experience as a requirement for human resources generalists. Whatever your degree is in, it is important that you have experience with computers, including Microsoft Office and HRIS (Human Resources Information System). Additionally, you should have strong organizational and people skills, and be detail-oriented.
